What Causes Conveyor Belt Misalignment?
Conveyor belt misalignment (or mistracking) is one of the most common issues in material handling systems. When a belt drifts to one side, it can cause excessive wear, spillage, damage to components, and costly downtime. Understanding the root causes is key to preventing and fixing the problem.
1. Uneven or Off-Centre Loading
One of the most frequent causes of misalignment is improper loading of material onto the belt.
How it happens:
- Material is fed off-centre
- Uneven distribution across the belt width
- Large lumps impacting one side

- Belt is pulled toward the heavier side
- Continuous drifting over time

2. Misaligned Pulleys or Rollers
