How to fix conveyor belt mistracking when belt runs off to one side for the length of the conveyor

If a specific section of your conveyor belt consistently runs off to one side along the full length of the conveyor, the issue is usually related to belt condition or splice quality, rather than general alignment or loading. Below are the most common causes and how to resolve them.

Cause: Splice(s) not straight

If a splice is not perfectly square across the width of the belt, it can cause that section of the belt to track unevenly. As the splice passes through the system, it pulls the belt toward one side.

Cure:

If you are using a Smiley Monroe belt, contact Smiley Monroe and provide the belt ID number for support and guidance. A misaligned splice may need to be repaired or replaced to restore correct tracking.

Cause: Crooked or bowed belt

A belt that is slightly bowed or not running straight can cause one section to track off centre throughout the conveyor.

Cure:

If the belt is new, this issue may resolve itself over time as the belt runs in and settles. Ensure the conveyor is set up correctly and monitor performance during the initial running period.

Key takeaway

If only one section of the belt is mistracking, the problem is likely with the belt itself rather than the conveyor structure.

Focus on:

  • Checking splice accuracy
  • Inspecting for belt defects or bowing
  • Allowing new belts time to properly run in
